Midwinter Choral Workschop: German Music of the Early Baroque

CANCELLED

Following is a note from our Music Director, Bob Worth:

I am disappointed to have to tell you that we have decided to cancel this Saturday's Midwinter Singing Workschop. Although there are 21 of you already signed up, unfortunately we have very few men. Much of the music I had been planning for the day is divided into six or eight parts, so we'd need a minimum of 3 and preferably four strong men's sections to pull it off.

I don't know exactly what differences exist between this year and last year's Marenzio Workshop (42 participants), but it can't have helped that the 49ers' first playoff game in many years is a direct hit on our event this Saturday.

In addition, we may have missed some opportunities to get the word out; we've worked hard at it, but there may have been unexploited avenues. If you have ideas for publicizing future workshops, please let us know.

I appreciate so much your willingness to take part in what would have been a wonderful day of exploring wonderful music!

Many thanks and best wishes,

Bob Worth

All music will be rehearsed and performed a capella. While participants need not be professional singers, they should have a pleasant singing voice, experience in small ensemble singing, and the ability to sight-read.

Historical Dance Class

Many of you have been asking for classes in historical dance & so we have devised an introductory series which can be attended as single events or consecutively. This fall Cheryl Moore will touch on 3 different dances from France, England, & Italy. 3 more classes will be offered in the spring.

Class I: Renaissance France - "Suite of Branles"
French Dancing-Master Thoinot Arbeau suggested a typical branle-suite in his famous 1589 treatise Orchesographie - but we'll make our own & take a Renaissance trip around the world while we're at it!

Class II: Renaissance Italy - "Vercepe"
A ballo by Domenico da Piacenza (c. 1455). Really just a Renaissance version of a line dance!

Class III: Late Tudor/Early Stuart England - Dancing at the Inns of Court 1570-1675.
Do you think these dances were choreographies for the Revels or just notes from students' dance classes? Come learn one so you can join in the heated academic debate!

These beginning-level classes are open to all, no need to be a dancer or even a musician! Classes are limited to 16 students. Pre-registration on our website is required.

Please wear casual clothes that you feel comfortable moving in and, most importantly, a flexible shoe (preferably a dance teaching shoe, ballet slipper, jazz shoe, etc.). "Character" shoes are not recommended.

Bach Talk

Sonoma Bach presents Dan Solter, Bach scholar and long-time member of the Bach Choir, in an informal evening of talk, music and refreshments. Dan will discuss cantatas 62, 91, 16, 65, all included in the All-Bach Christmas Celebration to be performed in December 2010. As Dan notes here:

Each Bach cantata is a world, and this Bach Talk will look at each of our four cantatas in turn, expanding out into Bach's world wherever a connection can be found. We'll see how the Christmas story is told.

I was drawn to Bach, without having any real appreciation of classical music, when I first noticed the magic he works with his instrumental bass lines when he thinks no one can notice, and we'll see how our cantatas show that, especially in the recitatives. As in the last talk, the real focus will be on figuring out who this stranger is that lived in Bach's head.

Open to eneryone who is interested in J.S. Bach’s life and music. No admission charge. No registration required.

Music, Memories and the Brain

Presented by Dr. Petr Janata
Associate Professor of Psychology
University of California, Davis
The autobiographical memories evoked by music, and the associated emotions, are among the most powerful and poignant ways in which music engages the human brain. Using brief musical excerpts, Dr. Janata will discuss how we respond to memory-evoking music, both in terms of the memory content and the particular areas of the brain that are engaged in following the music's melodic and harmonic structure. While many areas of the brain support memories evoked by music, Dr. Janata will explain how a single area of the brain plays a particularly prominent role in associating music, memories, and emotions.

Welcome, Somer: Music of May and Midsummer

Saturday, June 6, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Ives 119, Sonoma State University

Join us for an exciting full-day vocal music workshop featuring early music specialist Shira Kammen. We'll look at Medieval and Renaissance compositions, as well as traditional Anglo-American songs celebrating the May season, springtime love of the court and of the country, gardens and greenery, and renewal. The pieces will feature virelais and rondeaux by Guillaume Dufay, secular music of Ludwig Senfl, and the acclaimed Anonymous as well as a goodly amount of British Isles traditional music. All voice parts are needed; some sightsinging skills required.

Shira Kammen
Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Shira Kammen has spent well over half her life exploring the worlds of early and traditional music. A member for many years of the early music Ensembles Alcatraz and Project Ars Nova, and Medieval Strings, she has also worked with Sequentia, Hesperion XX, the Boston Camerata, the Balkan group Kitka, the Oregon, California and San Francisco Shakespeare Festivals, and is the founder of Class V Music, an ensemble dedicated to performance on river rafting trips. She has performed and taught in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Israel, Morocco, and Japan, and on the Colorado, Rogue and Klamath Rivers.

Shira happily collaborated with singer/storyteller John Fleagle for fifteen years, and performs now with several new groups: a medieval ensemble, Fortune's Wheel: a new music group, Ephemeros; an eclectic ethnic band, Panacea; as well as frequent collaborations with performers such as storyteller/harpist Patrick Ball, sopranos Anne Azema , Susan Rode Morris, medieval music expert Margriet Tindemans, and in many theatrical and dance productions.

She has played on several television and movie soundtracks, including 'O', amodern high school-setting of Othello. Some of her original music can be heard in an independent film about fans of the work of JRR Tolkien. The strangest place Shira has played is in the elephant pit of the Jerusalem Zoo. She hopes to spend more time playing music of all kinds in the wilderness.

Renaissance Motets: Sightreading Workshop for Small Ensembles

Next class:TBD

Simona Nass and Paul Kim bring their passion, knowledge, and vast collection of Renaissance Motets to a workshop designed to help singers get the most out of their sightreading skills. Singers will have the opportunity to sing one on a part in small ensembles formed based on individual experience.

Simona Nass has been singing choral music since elementary school, including participating in recordings with Cantori/New York and the Renaissance Street Singers. However, she is primarily known for being a Renaissance motet sight-singing obsessionist. After sight-singing Renaissance motets for over a decade, she started hosting Renaissance motet sight sings in 2005, gathering a different set of 4-8 singers several times a month. Nearly 200 singers have participated, ranging from professional singers with strong sight-singing skills to less advanced community chorus members.

Paul Kim is an SFSU Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and is currently pursuing his Master of Music in Choral Conducting with Josh Haberman, also at SFSU. He is the director of the International Orange Chorale (www.iocsf.org), the San Francisco State University Women's Chorus, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, and was a member of RoShamBo, a professional a cappella jazz/pop sextet.
