Chanticleer in Sonoma Choral Workshop - About Us

    June 15-19, 2011

"There was such a sense of fun and joy amidst the serious business of making beautiful music. Chanticleer's accessibility and high level of professionalism and respect for the participants combined to provide a fabulous time."

Our Workshop is presented by Chanticleer and Sonoma Bach at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California.

    CHANTICLEER
Led by Music Director Matthew Oltman, Chanticleer is praised by the New York Times as "America's favorite choral ensemble." Chanticleer has developed a worldwide reputation for its empeccable musicaianship, beauty of sound, and a wide-ranging repertoire from Renaissance and Mexican Baroque to jazz, gospel, folk, and adventurous new music. With its seamless blend of twelve male voices ranging from countertenor to bass, the GRAMMY Award-winning ensemble is internationally renown as "an orchestra of voices." For its diverse and comprehensive education programs designed for students and teachers, Chanticleer won Chorus America's prestigious Education and Outreach Award in 2010.

    SONOMA BACH
Sonoma Bach, a nonprofit organization, promotes the performance and enjoyment of early music in the northern San Farncisco Bay Area. It brings together singers and instrumentalists from the surrounding community and beyond to prepare and present outstanding performances, as well as to plan and offer a broad array of educational activities. Sonoma Bach works to build a community of musicians and music-lovers of all ages to share the experience of magnificent music.

    SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY
The workshop takes place on the park-like campus in Rohnert Park, 45 miles north of San Francisco. Deluxe housing is available on campus in new apartments, with full food service and access to the facilities of the University, including the library, swimming pool, new recreation center, and rehearsal rooms in the Music Department.

Opportunities for recreation and sightseeing off-campus before and after the workshop include visits to local wineries, hikes in the hills, trips to the redwoods and the Russian River, browsing for antiques in small towns and drives along the breathtaking Sonoma County coastline.

"Thanks to all the members of Chanticleer for their graciousness, willingness to teach and share information about themselves, and their sense of humor. Everyone involved could not have been more generous and kind with their assistance and encouragement."
