Have you ever read (or even just browsed through) the Book of Revelation? What a trip! This last book of the New Testament—also known as the Apocalypse of St. John—has attracted attention through the many centuries for its wild imagery, its prophecies of the end of the known world and what is to follow, and its many characters and lavish stage scenery. It has been the inspiration for works of visual art of all genres, and of course composers have drawn liberally from its text through the centuries. We will follow the thread of the tale in musical settings by many composers, including Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Guillaume de Bouzignac, William Boyce, Heinrich Schütz, Hugo Distler, and many others.
Community Outreach: High School Choirs
This season, the Green Mountain Consort will visit local high school choirs to share the joy of singing and introduce students to the rich sounds of Renaissance music. Through live performances and conversation, students will experience music that is both centuries old and surprisingly fresh. These visits offer a chance to connect with young singers, spark curiosity, and encourage a lifelong appreciation for choral music and the shared experience of making it together.

Though often associated with dramatic visions of the end of the world, Revelation is also a story of hope, perseverance, and renewal. Its striking imagery continues to shape art and culture, inviting each generation to reflect on its meaning in new ways.
