Finally, as previously mentioned, we’ll step across a line we’ve rarely crossed: Circa 1600 will go spelunking through the 20th century and into the 21st. We’ll touch upon the rich chanson repertoire of the great impressionist composers Debussy and Ravel; we’ll explore Paul Hindemith’s grim madrigals and touching chansons; we’ll do a deep dive into Benjamin Britten, including his great Rejoice in the Lamb, with organ accompaniment and with lyrics by the eccentric Christopher Smart. Samuel Barber will make an appearance, as well as a number of living composers. And—wait for it!—a bit of jazz just might be heard as we usher out our season in style!

Circa 1600 is our mixed chamber choir, exploring the rich intersection of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. The group’s core repertoire spans the 16th and 17th centuries, with excursions back into the 15th century and forward to J.S. Bach. The ensemble’s artistic vision is shaped by the works of Josquin Desprez, Claudio Monteverdi, Heinrich Schütz and their contemporaries, bringing early music vividly to life.

David Hatt has been Assistant Cathedral Organist at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco since 1993. During the first half of 2017, he also served as Interim Organist at Grace Cathedral. He earned the M.A. degree in Music in 1978 from U.C. Riverside, following organ study with Raymond Boese and composition study with Barney Childs at the University of Redlands. During this time, he was also a member of the Redlands Improvisers Orchestra and worked for the Raymond Garner Co. rebuilding tracker organs. The influence of Childs led to performances at regional and national
conventions of the Society of Composers, Inc., and the College Music Society. He has been featured in the opera "I, Norton" by Gino Robair about a famous San Francisco historical character. Dave has also appeared several times with the San Francisco Symphony, SF Girls Chorus, WomenSing, and the SF Lyric Chorus. His compositions and arrangements have been published by Wayne Leupold Editions, Darcey Press, and Augsburg Fortress. Since 1998, he has presented several festivals of the music of Max Reger, including the sponsorship of Isabelle Demers.
