El Grillo by Josquin Deprez
First, the ridiculous: Josquin Desprez, in one of his lighter moments, wrote a song about a cricket who sings for the sheer love of it. Actually, legend has it that Josquin's colleague, Carlo Grillo, liked to complain about their patron's slovenly habits in making the payroll. Either way, it's a fun and festive song, including onomatopoetic representations of a cricket's (so-called) singing.
The zip file contains a score, a good recording, a text-translation and a pronunciation recording. You ight also enjoy checking out this video on YouTube by Voices of Music, featuring the redoubtable Shira Kammen, as well as several other musicians with whom we've worked in the past.
