In 1680, the Danish-German composer Dieterich Buxtehude published the first Lutheran oratorio: “Membra Jesu nostri patientis sanctissima” (The most holy limbs of our suffering Jesus). This monumental work consists of seven brief cantatas, each one devoted to one of Christ’s “limbs”: feet, knees, hands, sides, breast, heart and face.
