Sing Joyfully by William Byrd
Many of you will remember this wonderful piece from our concert in August of 2014 as part of the festivities for
the opening of Schroeder Hall. Circa 1600 also performed the piece as part of our Fall, 2016 'A Grateful Heart' concert.
The text is drawn from Psalm 81:Sing joyfully to God our strength: Sing loud unto the God of Jacob!
Take the song, bring forth the timbrel: The pleasant harp, and the viol.
Blow the trumpet in the new moon: Even in the time appointed, and at our feast day.
For this is a statute for Israel: And a law of the God of Jacob.
Byrd provides this joyful text with a festive setting for six voices. The musical lyrics inspired the composer with many colorful ideas for depictive passage. My personal favorite is 'Blow the trumpet in the new moon!'
